Banks and PIX in Porto Alegre
Brazil skipped a generation of banking. You will rarely use a boleto. You will live on PIX.
Opening an account
You need a CPF. With it, the least painful options for newcomers:
- Nubank: app, purple card, it works. The default.
- C6 Bank: similar, sometimes friendlier on credit.
- Inter: orange, also 100% app.
- Itaú / Bradesco / Banco do Brasil have physical branches, in case an agency asks for a document your digital bank will not issue.
Digital banks can freeze your account for “review” if foreign income looks strange. Keep a second account. Save screenshots of every PIX that is rent.
PIX
PIX moves money instantly between Brazilian accounts, 24 hours a day. You can use CPF, email, phone or a random key. It is accepted almost everywhere, from shops and restaurants to freelancers and private sellers.
There is no “I’ll Venmo you.” There is PIX or cash.
Internationally you still use Wise / a US or European account and then pull into Nubank. That hop is the slow part. Do it before you sign the lease, not during.
Credit, score, nome
Brazil has Serasa and SPC. They are not Schufa, but unpaid bills can follow you. After a few months of utility bills on your CPF, you start to build a local history. Before that, seguro-fiança can help.
Cash
Even with PIX and cards, keep some cash for markets, small shops and surprises. To withdraw, prefer ATMs inside banks, malls or busy places, and skip night withdrawals in quiet areas.
Paying the State
Taxes, fines and some fees are still paid by boleto, usually in the bank app itself. Before you pay, always check the beneficiary and distrust boletos that arrived from unknown WhatsApp numbers.
If you earn abroad
If you receive salary or other income from abroad, talk to an accountant about when you become tax-resident in Brazil and what you owe. Regular movements through a Brazilian account may need to be declared. If you need it, find an accountant who works in English. Porto Alegre has people used to foreign clients. Read taxes.
