Cost of living in Porto Alegre
Porto Alegre is cheaper than São Paulo, cheaper than the tourist parts of Florianópolis, and much cheaper than any large European city. Wages are lower too, obviously. If you earn in reais locally, the city is just normal. If you earn in dollars or euros, you can live well.

Food
A simple restaurant meal is about R$40. A mid-range dinner for two, about R$200. A beer in Cidade Baixa is R$8–R$15. Coffee is R$8–R$16.
Supermarkets: Zaffari / Bourbon (same group, nicer, more expensive), Carrefour, and Bistek, the newcomer from Santa Catarina. The Mercado Público is for produce, butchers, and the civic feeling that you live here. Model markets (Bom Fim on Sundays, neighbourhood fairs) also exist in places like Bom Fim and Centro.
Transport
A bus fare is R$5.30 (since 19 February 2026). Depending on where you live, mixing bus, Uber and bike is the best option. The city has Itaú’s orange bikes and an e-scooter network.
Bills
Basics for an 85 m² apartment sit around R$370 a month in the Numbeo basket. Fibre internet is around R$100. Mobile plans with 10 GB+ sit near R$60.
Health
Brazil has a public health system: SUS is free and works reasonably well for emergencies, but routine appointments and non-urgent exams are extremely slow. A copay health plan is a good option if you want regular doctor visits without spending a lot. Check the hospital network and inpatient costs. Read the policy carefully.
Daycare and schools
The public primary and elementary system in Rio Grande do Sul is weak, and public daycare and schools are quite bad.
Full-time private preschool can cost R$2,500–R$7,500 a month. There are several private-school networks; the most popular are the Maristas.
