Driving and getting a CNH in Porto Alegre

Do you need a car?

Not necessarily, if you live in Cidade Baixa, Bom Fim, Independência, Rio Branco, Centro or Menino Deus and work nearby. Walking, buses and apps are usually enough. Probably yes if you live in Hípica or farther Zona Sul, especially with children or several trips a day. A new compact car already costs well over R$100,000. Petrol in Porto Alegre was about R$6.15 a litre in August 2026. Add insurance, IPVA, parking and maintenance.

Foreign licences

If your country has an agreement with Brazil (Vienna Convention and similar), you can drive for 180 days from the date of entry on a valid licence. Bring the original. An International Driving Permit helps when the officer cannot read your card.

After 180 days, convert at DETRAN-RS. You will need CPF, proof of address, a sworn translation if the licence is not in Portuguese, a medical exam and a psychological test. The DETRAN fee table lists those exams at R$90 each.

If your country has no agreement, you take the theory and practical tests in Portuguese.

Driving schools sell a package: medical exam, psychological test, theory, lessons, the practical. It takes months if your diary is tight. The test is in Portuguese.

Parking and surviving

Do not leave laptops, bags or other valuables visible in the car.

Zona Azul is paid street parking. Check the app in use and the local rules. Motorbikes have specific parking areas; cars should respect bays and signs. On Grêmio or Inter match days, some streets near the stadiums can be blocked. Check traffic before you leave.

Ride apps

Uber and 99 are the best options for getting around the city. Avoid taxis if you can.
