Emergency numbers in Porto Alegre
190, 192, 193. Save them. Save a hospital that takes your plan too.
Brazil’s emergency numbers are national. They work in Porto Alegre.
| Number | Who |
|---|---|
| 190 | Military police |
| 192 | SAMU (ambulance) |
| 193 | Firefighters (they also do a lot of rescues) |
| 191 | Federal highway police |
| 197 | Civil police (less “for now”) |
| 180 | Women’s support |
| 188 | CVV, suicide prevention, 24h |
Say the city, the street, the number and the nearest landmark. “Moinhos” is not an address. “Rua Padre Chagas, next to the park gate” is.
Hospitals you should know
- Hospital de Pronto Socorro (HPS): public trauma and emergency
- Hospital de Clínicas (HCPA)
- Hospital Moinhos de Vento: private. Bring the plan.
- Mãe de Deus, Santa Casa
If you have a plan, call the emergency line and go where they authorise, unless someone is dying in front of you. Then the nearest ER wins.
Floods and storms
The city publishes alerts. In a real Guaíba event, do not drive into brown water to “check on the car.” Go up. The 2024 lesson was not subtle.
