How to find a job in Porto Alegre

English-speaking roles exist. They are not plentiful. Portuguese still wins.

Porto Alegre’s economy is services, government, universities, hospitals, some industry, and a modest tech scene. It is not São Paulo. It is not a remote-work theme park. You can build a life here, but you probably cannot land a fully English job in two weeks unless you brought the job with you.

If you can keep a foreign remote job

Do that. Pair it with a VITEM XIV. This is the cleanest money in the city. Live in Bom Fim. Work New York hours. Walk to Redenção at lunch.

If you need a local job

Portuguese is the filter. Even “international” firms interview in Portuguese.

Places to look:

  • LinkedIn: still the grown-up board. Set location to Porto Alegre.
  • Gupy, Greenhouse, Kenoby: Brazilian ATS land. You will make 40 logins.
  • InfoJobs, Indeed, Catho
  • UFRGS / PUCRS / Hospital São Lucas / Hospital de Clínicas / Hospital Moinhos: if you are in health, research, or universities
  • Local tech: agencies, a few product companies, shops that sell into agribusiness and finance in the South

Salary math is in reais, monthly, often advertised as a partir de. Ask whether the number is CLT (formal payroll employment with 13th salary, FGTS, and vacation) or PJ (an independent contractor arrangement where you invoice through a company). Read Employee vs contractor: CLT vs PJ.

Average net pay in the Numbeo sample is about R$2,750. Skilled tech and professional roles pay more. They do not pay Lisbon-in-euros more.

English-speaking work

Teaching English, some support roles, multinational companies or a shared-services desk here and there.

If your Portuguese is A2, you are not competing yet. Go to class. It is nearly impossible to get by in the city without speaking Portuguese.

CLT: formal employment

CLT, short for Brazil's Consolidation of Labour Laws, means you are a formal employee on payroll. You get:

  • A signed employment record (carteira de trabalho, now digital)
  • 13th salary
  • 30 days’ vacation
  • FGTS deposits
  • INSS
  • Limits on firing (they can still fire you; they just pay more)
  • A boss who cannot pretend you are a vendor

The headline salary may be lower than the PJ quote for the same work. Compare the full package before deciding.

PJ: independent contracting

PJ, short for Pessoa Jurídica, means you work as an independent contractor and invoice through a company, often a MEI or a simple company structure (sociedade). You do not receive a 13th salary, FGTS, or unemployment benefit, and the client can end the contract.

Companies may prefer PJ because it costs less. If one client sets your hours and directs your work, Brazilian courts may treat the arrangement as disguised employment. Ask a labour lawyer before signing.

How to compare an offer

Ask for both numbers: monthly CLT gross vs monthly PJ invoice. Then add, on the CLT side, 13th, FGTS (~8%), and vacation. On the PJ side, subtract taxes, accounting, INSS, and a private health plan.

If the PJ premium is under roughly 30–40%, CLT often wins once you price insurance, leave, and the risk of unpaid gaps between contracts.

MEI

MEI is a simplified sole-proprietor structure with a R$81,000 revenue cap in 2026 and a limited list of permitted activities. It can suit side work. It may be inappropriate for a full-time senior role that functions like employment.
