Safety in Porto Alegre

Ordinary city precautions: keep the phone out of sight, Uber from Centro at night, and skip jewellery on the orla after dark.

Porto Alegre has real crime. It also has residents who have lived here 40 years with no story.

Habits that work

  • Walk like you know the block. Phone in the pocket. Backpack in front on the bus.
  • Centro Histórico empties after work. Take Uber.
  • The orla is wonderful at sunset and less predictable late at night, though the municipal guard now monitors it 24 hours a day.
  • ATMs inside malls and banks. Not in dark corners.
  • If a motorcycle with two people slows beside you, you already know that scene from every Brazilian city. Cross, go into a shop, do not be polite.
  • Do not fight for a phone. Phones are cheap compared with a hospital.

Neighbourhoods

Crime numbers follow foot traffic. Centro numbers are high because everyone passes through. Jardim Europa numbers are tiny because nobody does. Cidade Baixa is busy and messy and, mostly, safe if you are not drunk and shining with camera gear.

Ask about your specific street. A “good neighbourhood” can still have a rough stretch a few blocks away.

At home

A building with a doorman (porteiro) is worth money. Ground-floor windows on quiet streets get bars. Do not buzz in anyone you did not invite. Package theft is common.

Football

Gre-Nal days are a civic event. Wear the wrong shirt into the wrong bar if you want a social-science lesson. If you do not care, wear neither.

Police

190 for now. Do not expect English. Have your address written down. For theft, you file a BO (boletim de ocorrência), often online. You need it for insurance, not catharsis.
