Public transit in Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre mostly moves by bus. There is no underground metro; Trensurb is a surface train linking Porto Alegre to Canoas, Novo Hamburgo and other metro-area cities. It is useful if you live or work along the line, and little use if you live in a neighbourhood like Tristeza.

Buses and EPTC

EPTC regulates Porto Alegre public transit. Since 19 February 2026, a bus fare is R$5.30, and a regular monthly spend sits around R$300. You can pay with a Tri card or the digital options on offer. Payment methods change, so check current EPTC information. At peak hours, especially on corridors between Zona Norte and Centro, buses run fuller and later. In farther neighbourhoods such as Hípica, gaps between lines can be longer.

Trensurb

One line, more or less. From Mercado / Centro out through the northern metro area. Cheap and useful. It does not go to the airport, the orla parks or PUCRS.

Rides, apps and bikes

Uber and 99 are heavily used at night, with luggage, or when public transit is inconvenient.

Bikes work well on the Orla and the cycle paths. Elsewhere, hills and traffic can make it harder. Wear a helmet and lights.

Shared vans (lotações) are more common in the metro area. Inside Porto Alegre, public transit is mostly buses.

Airport (Salgado Filho / POA)

It is in the city, which is a blessing, and it flooded in 2024, which is a scar. Uber is the default. Budget extra time when it rains hard.

Driving instead

Many families choose a car, especially if they live far from Centro or need a lot of trips. In busy neighbourhoods such as Moinhos de Vento, parking can be hard. Read driving.
